Teachers and parents know their students best and can use their judgment based on maturity level. The first three volumes—covering topics like self-worth, confidence, emotional health, and goal-setting—are suitable for students as young as 4th grade. Adults can select specific articles that fit their child’s readiness.
Important: Volume 4 includes sensitive topics such as pornography, sexual abuse, and sex trafficking, which may be too mature for some younger readers. We recommend previewing these articles and introducing them only when appropriate. However, certain sections (like internet safety or early exposure to porn) may still be valuable to address in age-appropriate ways, since research shows the average age of first exposure to pornography is 9–11 years old.
Ultimately, The Brave Series is flexible—use it in the way that best fits your students or family.

While originally written for youth, the Brave Series has proven to impact all ages—from young adults to seniors. Many adult and leadership groups use it for personal growth and discussion.
As one reader shared:
“I love Brave & Beautiful! My 87-year-old mom is reading it and can hardly put it down! I’m sharing this with my oldest daughter, who is 20, and even my youngest daughter, who is 12 years old! The quality is phenomenal! What an all-encompassing range!” - Angela Cannon

Yes. While The Brave Series is designed to flow through the four volumes in sequence, each one also stands alone. You can start with any volume that best fits your teen’s current needs.
For example, if emotional health is your focus, begin with Volume 2. One school started with Volume 4, then worked through Volumes 1–3, and it worked wonderfully.
Here’s a quick overview of each theme:
Vol. 1: Builds identity and purpose
Vol. 2: Strengthens emotional health
Vol. 3: Builds Character and leadership
Vol. 4: Equips students to protect themselves from exploitation and trafficking
Each volume has a natural progression of topics, but like a magazine, you can skip ahead to sections that address immediate needs—such as reading the chapter on grief in Volume 2 when students are processing loss.
-
Yes! It can be very effective when there’s a positive, trusting connection. The goal is open, heart-to-heart conversation—not lecturing. Listen, validate their feelings, and share your own experiences appropriately. Be a safe place where teens feel understood and not judged.
-
We strongly encourage respecting students’ privacy. The journaling and reflection pages are meant to be personal, allowing teens to be open and honest. Reading their entries without permission can hinder that process. Let them share their thoughts or artwork only if they choose to.
-
We’ve created Facilitator Guides with discussion questions, class activities, and lessons for each chapter to help you lead meaningful conversations.
You can also use a book club style approach—perfect for small groups or adult gatherings. Simply choose an article, read a short passage aloud, and invite discussion. This open, conversational format helps participants process topics together in a safe and respectful space. Even those who haven’t pre-read can still join in and gain valuable insights.
For larger groups of 10 or more, consider purchasing the Brave Together curriculum with online access to 80+ digital lesson plans and slide decks based on core articles.
